What's the process for applying to the Naval Academy while in college?

I'm considering applying to the United States Naval Academy, but I'm already in college. Does anyone know how the application process works for someone in my situation? Is it any different than applying from high school?

Applying to the United States Naval Academy, often known as Annapolis, as a college student is certainly possible and not drastically different from applying as a high school student. However, there are a few key factors to be aware of.

Firstly, one criterion to bear in mind is age. To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 17 and 23. You are not to turn 23 before July 1 of the year that admission is sought. In addition, you must be unmarried and not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support a child or children.

Secondly, you will need a nomination to Annapolis, as all applicants do. Your nomination source may be a bit different, though. If you are currently enrolled at a different service academy, you may seek a nomination from the Superintendent of your current academy. Alternatively, you may be eligible for nomination by a Member of Congress, the Vice President, or the President, as well as a few other sources. It's crucial to start with your nomination applications as quickly as possible, as the deadlines can be quite early.

Thirdly, even as a college student, you'll still need to submit your high school transcript and standardized test scores (either SAT or ACT), as the Academy requires these irrespective of your current educational status. Comparatively, your performance in college will also be examined, but keep in mind, performance at the collegiate level usually does not replace their focus on high school performance.

Finally, although you're a college student, the physical requirements remain the same. You'll still need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) and meet the Academy's medical fitness standards.

Also bear in mind that irrespective of whether you are accepted, upon graduation you are committing to at least 5 years of service as a Naval Officer, and you still have a 4-year academic course to complete even if you have college credits. Transferring of credits is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Start by discussing your intentions with the admissions office at Annapolis. They can help lead you through the process and help you avoid common pitfalls.
