Applying to the Naval Academy Prep School, what to expect?

Thinking about applying to the Naval Academy Prep School to enhance my application to the academy itself. What should I know before applying? How rigorous is the academics and military training there?

The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) is a rigorous program designed to prepare candidates who need additional academic and leadership preparation before entering the United States Naval Academy.

The academic program at NAPS is rigorous with a curriculum consisting primarily of math, chemistry, physics, and English. The schedule can be demanding, usually beginning early in the morning and ending in late afternoon, with a two-hour mandatory study period each weeknight commonly known as 'Academic Call To Quarters'. You should expect to spend numerous hours studying outside of the classroom. If you're used to a challenging academic workload in high school, this could be in your favor.

As for military training, all midshipman candidates at NAPS will participate in military training to develop physical fitness and introduce the basics of Naval life. This includes leadership positions in their companies, physical education, military training throughout the year, and participation in a final week-long training exercise.

It's also important to remember that at NAPS, you begin to develop the foundation of professional conduct, physical fitness, and study habits that will continue at the Naval Academy, setting you on a course for success. It's certainly challenging, but it's meant to be a cushion transition to the Naval Academy lifestyle and its unique requirements.

All in all, applying to NAPS signifies a strong sign of dedication to a potential Naval career. If appointed, one should expect a rigorous year but one that's full of opportunities to grow as a scholar, an athlete, and a leader.

I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what to expect from the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Best of luck with your application!
