What is it like to visit the Annapolis Naval Academy?

I'm planning to visit the Annapolis Naval Academy soon. Can anyone share their experience or must-see spots at the academy? Also, are there any cool tours or events I should check out during my visit?

Visiting the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis is a unique experience. The campus, referred to as the "Yard," is steeped in history, and you can truly feel the sense of discipline, tradition, and camaraderie the moment you step foot on it.

Begin your visit at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center for a guided walking tour. Trained guides will provide you with a wealth of information about the academy's history, traditions, and mission. A highlight of these tours is the chance to see Bancroft Hall, one of the largest dormitory buildings in the world, which houses all midshipmen.

Don't miss the chance to visit the United States Naval Academy Chapel, a striking and historic spot. The stained glass windows and the simplicity of the chapel make it a place of serenity. Adjacent to the chapel is the Naval Academy Cemetery and Columbarium, where many notable naval figures are interred.

The impressive Naval Academy Museum is another must-see. Here you'll find artifacts and exhibits related to the academy's history and naval warfare. One highlight is the gallery of ship models, including incredibly detailed replicas of sailing ships from the Age of Exploration.

If possible, try to plan your visit to coincide with the Noon Meal Formation, a daily military tradition where the Brigade of Midshipmen forms up for uniform inspections. It's quite an incredible sight!

You might also enjoy walking through Tecumseh Court, the academy’s main courtyard named for the iconic bust of the Native American leader, Tecumseh, that stands there (on the pedestal, it's actually Tamanend, a legendary Delaware Chief). The midshipmen consider him their 'unofficial' mascot.

Keep in mind that some areas on campus may be restricted and all visitors are required to show valid identification upon entry. It’s advised that you check the official website before your visit to ascertain any particulars and to contact the admissions office if you're interested in a more comprehensive visit or schedule a chat with a midshipman for more candid insights.

Bonus Tip: If you have time, explore Annapolis itself. It’s a quaint and historic city with charming colonial-era streets, fantastic seafood, and a beautiful waterfront.
