Do Naval Academy Grads Go Directly to O2 Rank After School?

I'm considering a career through the Naval Academy and curious about the rank structure after graduation. Do academy graduates become O2 rank immediately, or do they have to serve some time as O1 first? Trying to map out my potential career path!

After graduation from the United States Naval Academy, graduates are commissioned as military officers and start in the O1 pay grade. For those graduates heading into the Navy or Marine Corps, they would start off as Ensigns and Second Lieutenants respectively.

Promotion timelines can vary based on a variety of factors, but generally speaking, naval officers can expect to be promoted to O2 rank (Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy) after about two years of service. It's important to note that earning promotions in the military involves meeting specific service and performance requirements, so active engagement in your service responsibilities will be key.

Remember, each branch has its own unique rank structure and promotion system. So, it's a great idea to familiarize yourself with these as you plan your potential career path. Good luck!
