What are some notable Annapolis Naval Academy traditions?

I'm curious about the traditions at the Annapolis Naval Academy. Are there any unique or interesting ones that are a big part of the community there? I'd love to hear about how these traditions play a role in student life.

Absolutely, the U.S. Naval Academy located in Annapolis, often simply referred to as 'Annapolis', is filled with time-honored traditions that demonstrate both the camaraderie and military discipline of the students, or midshipmen as they are referred to, within this historic institution.

A notable tradition is "Plebe Summer", an intensive six-week program intended to transition incoming freshmen, known as Plebes, from civilian to military life. This period is intense, with training in physical conditioning, swimming, sailing, marksmanship, and most importantly, inculcating them with the principles of honor, loyalty, and obedience.

The Naval Academy's annual "Sea Trials" marks the end of the Plebe's first year, comprised of a day-long session of various physically and mentally demanding activities. This event pushes the midshipmen to their limits, reminiscent of the US Navy and Marine Corps’ own 'Hell Week'.

The "Herndon Climb" is another unique tradition. It involves the Plebes working together to scale the Herndon Monument, a 21-foot-tall obelisk greased with lard, to replace a plebe "Dixie cup" hat at the top with a midshipman's cover. Successful completion signals the official "end" of Plebe year.

"Ring Dance" is an important event in the life of a Midshipman. It marks the “graduation” of a Midshipman from underclass status to upperclass status, and the receipt of the class ring. The rings are traditionally dunked in water from the 'seven seas' before wearing, symbolizing the world-wide presence of the Navy and the Marine Corps.

Additionally, the Army-Navy Game, a football game against the West Point Army Cadets, is among most emblematic and celebrated of Naval Academy traditions. The week leading up to the game is filled with pep rallies, bonfires, and pranks—culminating in the historic game.

The significance of these traditions lies in their ability to foster unity among the midshipmen while also instilling the core values of loyalty, integrity and service. They play an integral part in the Mids' journey at the Naval Academy.
