Can enlisted members apply to the US Naval Academy?

I'm currently enlisted and thinking about applying to the Naval Academy. Does anyone know what the application process is like for those already in the service? Are there special considerations or pathways?

Absolutely, enlisted servicemen and servicewomen can apply to the U.S. Naval Academy. All branches of the military are eligible and there is a special pathway known as the Seaman to Admiral-21 (STA-21) program. This is a full-time undergraduate education program for selectees to earn a commission in the Naval Service.

The steps to apply as an enlisted sailor are a bit different from those of a traditional high school applicant and include the following:

1. Obtain Command Approval: As the first step, you have to get your commanding officer’s approval for applying to the Naval Academy. Their written endorsement is mandatory.

2. Candidate Application through USNA Admissions: Once you've gotten command approval, you'll move onto the standard elements of the Naval Academy application: college entrance exams (either the ACT or SAT), medical examinations, fitness assessments, and obtaining nominations (though as a service member, you should be eligible to receive a nomination from the Secretary of the Navy).

3. Congressional Nomination: Just like civilian applicants, you also require a Congressional nomination to be considered for admission. Keep in mind that active-duty personnel are generally considered for a nomination from the Vice President or a service-affiliated congressional member.

4. Preparatory School: If necessary, enlisted candidates may spend a year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island, in preparation for the Academy.

Keep in mind, meeting the educational, physical, and moral requirements are key to becoming a competitive candidate, so definitely focus on those as you work through the application process. Working with a mentor or someone familiar with the process can also be extremely beneficial. Good luck!
