What are some good jobs for transitioning out of the military?

I'm exploring career options after my military service ends next year. I'm curious about jobs that value military experience and offer a good transition to civilian life. Any advice on industries or specific roles that might be a good fit? Thanks!

The transition from military to civilian life can appear daunting but the skills and experiences you've gained during your service can be transferable and highly valued in many industries. Here are three broad career categories that you might consider for your transition:

1. Government Services: Many veterans find themselves comfortable working in the public sector, as it often retains a similar structure to the military. Federal jobs in particular are a good fit due to veteran preference in hiring for many positions. Jobs in departments such as Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, or Defense can leverage your military experience directly. Federal law enforcement (FBI, DEA, TSA etc) also value military experience, as do local and state governments.

2. Defense Contractor and Security Services: These industries work closely with the military, usually providing products and services directly to them, and thus often seek employees with a military background. Roles here could range from project management, to logistics, to consulting roles, depending on your specific military experience.

3. Operations and Logistics: This is a broad category that covers a lot of ground, but industries like manufacturing, transportation, and supply chain management all require the kind of strategic, operations-focused thinking that military professionals are known for.

Another option could be to attend college or a trade school if you have not already done so. The Post-9/11 GI Bill can help veterans cover the cost of tuition, and college or vocational training can open up a broader range of careers.

Moreover, don't forget the importance of networking. Websites geared towards connecting veterans to civilian jobs like LinkedIn's Veterans program, Hiring our Heroes, or Appily can be great resources. One last piece of advice: When writing your resume, remember to translate military jargon into civilian terms so hiring managers can understand and appreciate your experiences and skills.

Wishing you a smooth transition, and thank you for your service!
