Can you attend the Naval Academy as a veteran?

I'm currently serving in the military and am considering applying to the Naval Academy. Are there any special considerations or requirements for veterans seeking admission?

Certainly, veterans are welcome to apply to the Naval Academy! They provide two specific programs for active-duty service members: Naval Academy and Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS).

The Naval Academy Prep School is a pathway usually recommended for enlisted sailors and Marines who have been out of high school for a while or those who could use some extra preparation for the academic rigors of the academy. It is a 10-month program located in Newport, RI, that serves to strengthen midshipman candidates’ math and English skills.

For both programs, service members are required to obtain approval for participation from their commanding officer and service secretary. Additionally, they must meet the same basic eligibility requirements as high school applicants, including age limitations (you must be able to graduate before turning 29 in most cases), citizenship, and medical qualifications. One thing to note is SAT/ACT scores are typically required, but there may be some flexibility depending on the veterans' work experience and other qualifications.

Your application would likely include an explanation of why you're interested in transitioning from your current role to the Naval Academy, so be prepared to provide a compelling rationale for why this step makes sense for your career progression. Your military experience could be a great bonus, as it likely gave you a mature understanding of military life, leadership experience, and a strong work ethic - all things that would serve you well at the Naval Academy.
