Can enlisted people go to the Naval Academy?

I'm currently enlisted and thinking about applying to the Naval Academy. Does being enlisted help my application, and are there specific pathways for enlisted personnel? What should I know before starting the application process?

Yes, enlisted personnel can certainly apply to the Naval Academy. Each year a certain number of appointments are set aside for enlisted sailors and Marines. This special admissions path is often referred to as the "prior-enlisted" route.

Having enlisted experience can indeed strengthen your application as it shows a commitment to military service and may show qualities like leadership and teamwork. More so, enlisted personnel possess an unwritten but widely recognized "street cred" that comes from practical experience in the field.

When you begin your application process, you'll want to focus on some key areas:

1. You will need a nomination as part of the application process. Either your commanding officer (CO) or a US Senator or Representative could provide this. Generally, a nomination from your CO may carry more weight in this context. Additionally, don't forget that being enlisted does not exempt you from securing such a nomination.

2. Academically, you should also have a strong GPA and standardized test scores (if applicable). The selection board will review your high school and any college-level transcripts.

3. Physical fitness is another aspect that will be factored into your application. You'll need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) which includes exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, a one-mile run, and more. Start training for this well in advance of your application.

4. Last but not least, leadership potential matters. Here, your service experience can be a significant strength, bringing real-world experience to your potential Naval Academy class.

Overall, don't shy away from highlighting your accomplishments during your service and put an emphasis on what you have learned and how it contributes to your desire to attend the Naval Academy. Best of luck with your application!
