Career in the private military sector: How to enter?

I'm interested in jobs in the private military sector. Can someone outline the different career paths in private military companies and what sort of experience or background is typically required?

Private military companies (PMCs), sometimes called private security companies, offer a range of services, often in areas of the world where the regular military is not present or is otherwise stretched thin. They provide services like security details, risk assessment, logistical support, and training, amongst others.

To enter the private military sector, there are generally three typical paths:

1. Former Military: Many people who work in PMCs come directly from military service. Combat arms backgrounds, such as infantry or special forces, can be particularly valuable. This isn't by any means the only path, but companies do value military experience because it provides a practical, firsthand understanding of the services these companies offer.

2. Law Enforcement: Experience in law enforcement, particularly in roles that involve high-risk situations such as SWAT teams, can be sought after in the private military sector. Expertise in areas such as investigations and surveillance can also be beneficial.

3. Specialized Skills: PMCs also need employees with specialized skills, not all of which are combat related. Skills in logistics, intelligence analysis, IT, and engineering can all be valuable in the private military sector.

In terms of background requirements, it often depends on the specific job within the PMC. For combat roles, many companies prefer a background in the special forces or at least military experience in a combat role. For roles requiring specialized skills, qualifying experiences could come from a variety of areas, including the military, law enforcement, or civilian sectors.

Education requirements vary as well. Some positions don't require a college degree, while others may require a degree in a relevant field. However, many PMCs have a preference for candidates who have pursued some level of higher education.

In addition to this, applicants typically must pass a background check, a medical examination, and potentially a fitness test.

Besides, it's important to consider that private military work often involves spending extended periods overseas, sometimes in unstable areas, so it's not a career to be taken lightly. At the same time, for those with the right skills and mindset, it can be engaging and even rewarding work.
