Government jobs that are accepting of a military pension?

I'm planning to retire from the military after I serve post-high school and am looking into government jobs. Are there specific government positions that acknowledge or have policies accommodating a military pension?

Certainly, many government jobs are very welcoming of military veterans and acknowledge your military pension. One of the key policies you'll want to be familiar with is the "Military Service Deposit" policy which allows veterans to purchase credit for their military service time to be included in their civil service retirement.

If a service member is retired both from the military and from federal civilian employment, they can continue to receive both their military retirement annuity and their Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) or Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) annuity. This does require a buyback of their military time (i.e., making a deposit to the retirement system), but it can be an important way to increase one's total retirement income.

You might look into Defense-related government jobs (Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, etc.) as they tend to be more familiar with military service and are often looking for individuals with military experience.

Another option worth considering is positions that involve Veterans Affairs. Your military expertise could make you a strong candidate for this department as it operates to handle matters directly related to veterans.

Lastly, many federal, state, and local government jobs provide veterans' preference during the hiring process. This policy acknowledges the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military by giving them a leg up in the competitive federal job market.

I hope this information helps and good luck with your transition to civilian life! You've earned your military pension and it's great to see that you're exploring paths that recognize your service.
