Instructor roles for military veterans?

Are there specific instructor jobs for veterans who are transitioning to civilian life? I'm trying to help a family member who is a veteran find teaching or instructor roles after serving. What organizations or programs offer such opportunities?

There are indeed numerous employment programs and organizations that specialize in helping veterans transition to civilian life, commercial careers, and, specifically, teaching roles. Organizations like Troops to Teachers and Heroes to Teachers are specially designed to help veterans find their footing in the education field, converting their military skills into classrooms skills.

Troops to Teachers, a program funded by the Department of Defense, is designed to assist transitioning service members and veterans to become teachers. The program provides counseling and referral services to help participants meet education and licensing requirements to teach, then assists them with finding a teaching position.

Heroes to Teachers provides similar support and service, albeit with a focus on vocational and technical education. They might be a good fit for veterans with technical specialties.

Moreover, non-education-specific programs like American Corporate Partners (ACP) or Hire Heroes USA might be beneficial as well. They offer career counseling and mentoring that could inevitably lead to opportunities in teaching.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many school districts across the United States offer alternative certification programs for veterans and other individuals who have a bachelor's degree but did not go through a traditional teacher education program. Not only will this help in gaining the required certification but such programs often offer hands-on, in-classroom training which can be incredibly beneficial.

Remember, every veteran's strengths, skills and preferences are unique. While some might find that a structured, obvious path like Troops to Teachers is the best for them, others might find more success charting their own course with the help of a mentor or career counselor. Assisting your family member in identifying their individual interests, strengths and passions would be a solid first step when deciding which path to take.
