How does military experience help with job hunting?

I'm thinking about joining the military but am also concerned about my future career. How does military experience translate to civilian jobs when applying?

While it's true that the scope of work done in the military is often quite different from civilian jobs, the experience can provide several benefits to your job hunt:

1. Transferable Skills: Certain positions in the military impart trade skills that are easily applicable in civilian life. For example, medics can transition into roles in healthcare, logistics officers can work in supply chain, and communications officers can work in corporate communications. Additionally, all military jobs provide training in teamwork, discipline, leadership, and the ability to adapt in stressful situations. These soft skills can be a deciding factor when it comes to hiring decisions.

2. Program Support: The military has several programs in place to aid in the transition back into civilian life, such as the Transition Assistance Program (TAP). These programs offer vocational training, career counseling, job-search assistance, and other support resources to ease the transition.

3. Networking Opportunities: The shared experience of being in the military forms a strong bond and often results in a tight-knit alumni network. These networks can open doors and lead to job opportunities in civilian fields.

4. Favorable Perception: Many employers view military experience favorably as it indicates possession of valuable skills such as leadership, discipline, and dedication. Some businesses actively seek to hire veterans.

5. Veterans' Preference: In Federal hiring, veterans often get a preference over non-veterans. Some private sector companies also have specific hiring policies for veterans to help them transition back to the civilian workforce.

6. GI Bill: If you intend to pursue further education after your service, the GI Bill offers substantial tuition assistance, which can open up more job opportunities for you in the future.

Remember that while the military can provide these benefits, your personal interest, commitment, and career goals should be fundamental in making this decision. Make sure to do ample research and seek advice from current or former service members to understand what to expect from military service.
