What jobs does the military offer for enlisted personnel?

I'm looking into potentially enlisting in the military after high school and I'm curious about the types of jobs or roles that are available. What should I know about the range of careers within the military services?

Enlisting in the military opens a wide array of job opportunities, each with its own set of qualifications and requirements. Broadly speaking, these can be grouped into different fields, including:

1. Combat specialties: These roles include infantry, artillery, and special operations forces. These individuals often participate in ground combat operations, use weapons, and employ strategies.

2. Administrative careers: This includes personnel and human resources specialists, finance, legal, and religious program specialists, among others.

3. Mechanical roles: These involve operating, maintaining, or repairing machines or equipment. This could be as an aircraft mechanic, a vehicle mechanic, or a nuclear reactor operator on a Navy submarine.

4. Healthcare: The military employs many healthcare workers, including nurses, doctors, surgeons, paramedics, and other specialists like psychologists and dietitians.

5. Supply and logistics: This covers jobs related to inventory control, the procurement of goods and services, distribution and transportation of supplies, and food services.

6. Transportation and material-handling: This includes operating and maintaining equipment to load and unload supplies or personnel, as well as driving military vehicles.

7. Electronic maintenance: This field comprises positions like communications equipment repair, computer repair, and radar and sonar repair.

8. Construction and engineering: These roles involve building or repairing buildings, airfields, bridges, and other structures.

Each of the five branches of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard) and the Space Force has its own unique job roles and operational mandates, giving you a lot of career pathways to consider. It is important to research each branch and role in-depth to find the best fit for your interests and skills. Additionally, taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) can help guide you towards the military careers you might excel in based on your abilities and knowledge. Working with a recruiter or career counselor can also be beneficial when trying to navigate your post-high school options.
