What are my options for military jobs in Houston?

I live in Houston and I'm thinking about joining the military after high school. What kind of military job opportunities are available in this area, and how do I apply for them?

There are several military occupations available in Houston, both in active duty roles and in reserve or National Guard roles. These opportunities can vary across different branches such as the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the newest branch, the Space Force.

1. Active duty roles: Generally in active duty, you may be required to move for your job. Houston itself has several recruiter offices for each military branch, where you could potentially start your journey.

2. Reservist roles: Being a reservist can be a great option if you're looking to stay in Houston for the most time, as you typically serve part-time and live in your own community.

3. National Guard roles: The Texas Army National Guard and Air National Guard have units across the state, including Houston. They serve both the nation and the state, and also typically serve part-time.

Each branch has a variety of jobs ('Military Occupational Specialties' in the Army and Marine Corps, 'Ratings' in the Navy, 'Air Force Specialty Codes' in the Air Force), ranging from infantry and aviation to healthcare, administration, and logistics. Which job you can get will depend on factors like your aptitudes (as measured by the ASVAB test), physical condition, and security clearance qualifications.

Interested individuals can apply to join the military through a process that includes contacting a recruiter, taking the ASVAB test, passing medical exams, and eventually going to basic training. You can find recruiters for each branch in Houston, either in an office or at job fairs and other events. They can guide you through the enlistment process and your career options.

Keep in mind that joining the military is a significant commitment. Be sure to do lots of research and talk to people in the military, especially those doing jobs you're interested in, to understand what the commitment entails.
