Curious about military jobs at space bases?

I'm exploring post-high school options and I'm really interested in the idea of working at military space bases. What kind of jobs are available in this area and what qualifications would I need to pursue them?

There are several career options in the military for those interested in space and technology, particularly in the U.S. Space Force, the newest branch of the US military. Wanting to work in a space base typically encompasses a wide range of roles, from space operations to intelligence, cyber, acquisitions, and engineering.

In space operations, for example, you could potentially work with satellite communications, missile warning systems, space surveillance, and space flight operations. Cyber security roles might focus on defending military networks and securing data. Some personnel work in acquisitions, procuring satellite systems and negotiating contracts, whilst engineers typically work in the design, development, and testing of aerospace systems and equipment.

As for qualifications, a strong background in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is generally required. While there are positions that only require a high school diploma and enlistment in the military, most of these require either a bachelor's degree or an officer's commission, which you could earn through attending a military academy, completing an ROTC program in college or attending Officer Training School after getting a degree.

The exact requirements might vary depending on the career track, but generally speaking, you would need a good level of fitness, U.S. citizenship, eligibility for a security clearance, and a willingness to commit a number of years to military service.
