Interested in a Navy military police job—what should I know?

Considering joining the Navy as a military police officer. What should I expect in terms of the job description, duties, and career progression? Any insights into training and lifestyle would be great!

As a Navy military police officer, or Master-at-Arms (MA), your role will primarily focus on maintaining law and order on naval installations and ships. Among other duties, MAs are responsible for enforcing regulations, conducting investigations into offenses, and managing correctional facilities. You might also have opportunities to specialize in areas like military working dog handling or protective service details.

For training, you'll begin with boot camp, which is nine weeks of basic military training. Following boot camp, you will have nine weeks of "A" school at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where you will learn about naval law enforcement procedures, self-defense techniques, firearm operation, and so much more.

Career progression is merit and performance-based, so as you gain experience and exhibit exemplary performance, you'll have the opportunity for advancement. There's a potential to rise in rank from an Enlisted rank to a Chief Petty Officer and even transition to a Commissioned Officer rank through programs such as the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) or Chief Warrant Officer (CWO). Each increase offers expanded responsibilities and increased pay. It's also possible to further specialize your career into areas such as investigations or the aforementioned dog handling—the Navy tends to offer a diverse array of advancement opportunities.

A military lifestyle is quite different from a civilian one—expect a structured environment with clear requirements for behavior and appearance. Also, be prepared to relocate frequently, as MAs can be stationed at any Navy base worldwide. Deployments can range from 6 to 9 months, and shore tours typically last between 3 to 4 years.

Overall, becoming a military police officer in the Navy can be a rewarding career choice, offering you unique experiences and career growth possibilities. However, it is also demanding, so make sure you're mentally and physically prepared for the challenges it may present.
