Juniors thinking about the Naval Academy

I'm a junior in high school considering the Naval Academy. Can anyone share what the application process is like and how competitive it is? Any tips on what I should focus on to improve my chances?

The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is a prestigious institution with a rigorous application process to match. With its acceptance rate often below 10%, it is highly competitive to get into.

The application process includes several steps beyond those of a traditional college. Along with completing a candidate questionnaire to prove academic and physical eligibility, all applicants are required to take the SAT or ACT, participate in a medical examination, and pass a fitness assessment.

Securing a nomination from a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, or the Vice President of the United States is another requirement. This involves another separate application and often an interview. Reach out to these offices early, as they each have their own deadlines and processes.

As for improving your chances, there are several areas on which you can concentrate. Academically, make sure your grades and test scores are robust, and taking challenging classes like APs can definitely strengthen your profile.

Also, remember the USNA is a military academy, dedicated to producing leaders in the U.S. Navy. Hence, leadership is highly valued. Engage in extracurricular activities that allow you to demonstrate leadership skills and qualities, like student government, sports teams, or community service organizations.

Physical fitness is critical, so maintain an active lifestyle and practice for the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA). This consists of tests in various physical capacities like strength and endurance.

Finally, attend events hosted by the USNA. These could be local events or programs at the academy like Summer Seminar or STEM camps. This can provide a first-hand experience of life at the academy and will show them your serious interest.

Remember, attending the USNA is also a commitment of 5 years of active-duty service after graduation, so ensure that this path aligns with your personal and professional goals. Best of luck!
