I'm a female high school junior interested in joining the military. I'm curious about the range of jobs available to women. Are there positions that are specifically recommended or highly pursued by females in the military?
As of today, every occupation within the US military is open to women. This came about due to a decision by the Pentagon in 2015 to lift all gender-based restrictions on military service. Positions ranging from infantry, armor, reconnaissance and special operations units, to submarine jobs, and everything in between are available to women who meet the qualifications.
However, keep in mind that opportunities may vary based on the branch of the military you choose. Some popular fields pursued by women in the military include, but are not limited to, healthcare (nurses, doctors, psychologists), aviation (pilots, air traffic controllers), logistics (transportation and supply chain management), intelligence (analysis, strategic planning), cyber operations, and human resources.
While these are positions commonly pursued, it doesn't mean that they're the 'best' or only paths for women in the military. What's more important is to find a career field that matches your skills, interests, and long-term career goals. Before making any decisions, I recommend speaking with a recruiter or someone currently serving in the military who can give you an inside perspective on different roles and help guide you in a direction that fits your personal objectives.
Remember, no matter the role, serving in the military is a commitment and a choice to potentially put yourself in harm's way to protect and serve your country. It demands physical and mental resilience, and it is important to consider these factors while making your decision.
