Military Careers in Electrical Engineering

I'm considering a degree in electrical engineering and am curious about military careers that align with this field. What kind of jobs would make the best use of my skills in the military?

The military has a wide range of opportunities for electrical engineers, across various branches. Here are a few options:

1. Air Force Research Engineer: As a research engineer in the Air Force, you could work on cutting-edge technology advancements, like radar systems, aircraft electronics, or satellite communications.

2. Navy Nuclear Engineer: The Navy maintains a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers, and electrical engineers often play key roles in designing, maintaining, and improving the complicated electrical systems on these vessels.

3. Army Communications Officer: Electrical engineers are often well-suited to roles in communications. You could design, install, and manage the communication networks the Army relies on.

4. Cyber Warfare Engineer (Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Army): Cyber warfare engineers design and implement cyber defense measures, often requiring a deep understanding of electrical systems and computer networking.

5. Space Force Satellite Development: The relatively new U.S. Space Force needs electrical engineers to develop and maintain the satellites that provide GPS, surveillance, and communications capabilities to the rest of the military.

6. Electrical Systems/Equipment Design & Maintenance: Each branch of the military relies on electrical engineers to design, install, and maintain various systems and equipment ranging from aircraft systems, weapons systems, power systems, to communications equipment.

Of course, these are just a few examples. Many other roles in the military could greatly benefit from an electrical engineering background. And don't forget that aside from specific roles, a military career also offers the potential for broad leadership and strategic planning experience, which can be beneficial in many later career paths. Whether your interest lies in design, research, leadership, or some combination thereof, the military likely has a role where your electrical engineering skills would be valuable.
