Firstly, it's important to understand that admission to the U.S. Naval Academy is a two-layered process that involves both an academic application and a nomination, usually by a Member of Congress.

Nominations can be sought from various sources such as your U.S. Representative, your U.S. Senators, the Vice President, and the President if you are a child of a career military personnel. To secure a nomination, it's a good idea to express your interest early and comply with the deadlines and requirements of each nomination source.

Your academic application will involve providing your high school transcripts, standardized test scores, and extracurricular activities. The Naval Academy values strong academic performance, so it's important to aim for high grades and a rigorous curriculum. As for standardized test scores, while no minimum score is stated, successful candidates typically score above the national average on both the SAT and ACT.

Your extracurriculars should ideally demonstrate leadership and commitment. Participating in sports, for example, is highly valued—approximately 90% of the entering class were varsity athletes. In addition, involvement in leadership roles, whether in student government, sports teams, or community organizations, can also boost your application.

The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is another crucial part of the application process. This assesses your physical aptitude through a variety of exercises, including a basketball throw, push-ups, pull-ups, a 1-mile run, and so on. Regular physical training to meet and exceed the Academy's fitness standards would be highly beneficial.

The Naval Academy also looks for moral character and leadership potential. Letters of recommendation and personal essays play a significant role in depicting these qualities. Make sure your recommendations come from individuals who can speak honestly about your capacity for leadership and your moral character, such as teachers or community leaders. Also, your essays should effectively illustrate your interest in serving the nation and your leadership abilities.

A medical examination is also required to evaluate if you meet the physical and medical standards required for a military career.

Finally, the Admissions Board will carry out a holistic review of your application, assessing all these factors together to make their decision.

So, to strengthen your application, excel academically, involve yourself in extracurricular activities, particularly sports and leadership roles, do well on the CFA, and ensure that your essays and recommendations showcase your leadership potential and commitment to serving the country.
