How to apply to Annapolis Naval Academy?

I'm interested in applying to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. What are the steps to apply, and what should I focus on during my junior year to stand out? Any tips on the application process would be appreciated!

Applying to the U.S. Naval Academy requires a few unique steps compared to applying to traditional colleges. Here's a brief overview:

1. Start the Application: The process officially begins when you fill out the Preliminary Application, which becomes available on the Naval Academy's site when you're in your junior year of high school.

2. Obtain a Nomination: This step is crucial. You require a nomination, typically from a U.S. Congressman or Senator (though there are a few other ways to receive one as well). Contact your local representative's office to express your interest and inquire about the nomination process. It's usually a competitive process in and of itself, so start early.

3. Complete the Candidate Questionnaire: After you've filled out your Preliminary Application and obtained a nomination, you'll be given a candidate number and will be able to complete the candidate questionnaire. This step finalizes your official application.

4. Participate in a Medical Exam: Schedule a medical exam through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board.

5. Complete the Physical Assessment: You'll also need to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes a battery of six physical activities including a basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed-arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run.

6. Official Standardized Test Scores: NAVAC will continue to superscore standardized tests, using the highest Evidence-based Reading and Writing (ERW) exam scores and the highest Math exam scores when evaluating applications. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, you're required to submit an SAT or ACT score.

7. Academic Transcript: NAVAC also requires transcripts from 9th to 11th grade and your 12th-grade courses when available.

For your junior year, maintain a strong academic record, particularly in math and science, as the Naval Academy values those most. Consider practicing for the CFA and work in any gaps in your physical training. Being physically fit is a significant part of succeeding at the Academy.

Also, leadership experience is particularly important for Annapolis applicants. Focus on any extracurricular activities where you hold leadership positions or have had a meaningful impact, such as school clubs, student government, or Eagle Scouts. Tier 1 or Tier 2 leadership roles can particularly make your application stand out.

Lastly, be sure to articulate your commitment to public service, whether in your application essays or interviews with local nominations sources. The Naval Academy, above all, is seeking committed, driven young people who are dedicated to serving their country. Good luck with your application journey!
