Getting admitted to the Naval Academy: Any advice?

I'm hoping to attend the Naval Academy in the future. What should I be doing now as a high school junior to prepare for the application process and increase my chances of getting admitted?

As an prospective candidate for the United States Naval Academy (USNA), you're not merely seeking a college admission but a long-term commitment as a future military officer. Here are some steps you can take as a high school junior:

1. Academic Rigor: The Naval Academy will look at your grades, class ranking, and the rigor of your high school courses. Make sure you're taking challenging classes, including APs or honors classes, particularly in math and science.

2. Physical Fitness: Physical readiness is an integral part of service academy life. Start training for the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes events like a basketball throw, pull-ups/flexed-arm hang, shuttle run, crunches, push-ups, and a one-mile run.

3. Leadership and Extracurriculars: Being involved in extracurricular activities shows that you're well-rounded and capable of managing your time effectively. Leadership roles in these activities can give you an edge. Try to get involved in activities such as sports, student government, community service, and clubs related to your interests. But don't forget, quality over quantity; meaningful involvement in a few activities is often more impressive than less significant involvement in many.

4. Standardized Tests: Although some colleges have shifted to test-optional policies, the USNA still requires the SAT or ACT. Aim to score within the middle 50% range of the Naval Academy's admitted students on either test. Start preparing early and consider taking the tests more than once to improve your scores.

5. Naval Service Obligation: Remember, admission to USNA is also about your desire to serve. Do extensive research into the life of a midshipman and the five-year service assignment after graduation to ensure this is the path you desire.

6. Obtaining a Nomination: You’ll need a nomination from a U.S. senator, U.S. representative, or the Vice President of the United States. Contact their respective offices early to understand their application process and deadlines.

Lastly, consider attending the Naval Academy's Summer Seminar. It gives you a week-long experience of life at the Academy and can help enhance your application.

Every journey to the Naval Academy is unique, but keeping these tips in mind can put you on a strong path towards your goal. It will take effort and dedication, but the rewards are well worth it. Best of luck!
