How are academic honors awarded at the Naval Academy?

I'm wondering about the criteria for earning academic honors at the Naval Academy. Do they follow a GPA-based system, or are there other requirements? What are the different types of honors that can be achieved?

At the United States Naval Academy (USNA), academic honors are categorized into three levels based on the midshipmen's cumulative academic performance.

Superintendent's List: This is the highest level of academic distinction at USNA. Midshipmen qualify for this if they have a semester GPA of 3.40 or better, grade of "B" or better in each course, military performance average (MPA) of 3.0 or better, and physical education average (PEA) of 3.0 or better.

Dean's List: Midshipmen qualify for Dean's List if they have a semester GPA of 3.4 or better.

Honor Roll: Midshipmen qualify for the Honor Roll if they have a semester GPA of 3.2 or more, and no individual grades below a C.

Semester GPAs are calculated on the basis of quality points obtained in academic, military, and physical education, following standard GPA calculation procedures. Note that midshipmen's performance in all three categories (academic, military, physical education) are valued and taken into account.

Midshipmen are also eligible for numerous departmental awards for excellence in particular academic subjects. These awards are given based on the recommendation of USNA faculty and vary depending on individual performances in specific courses.

So, in addition to having a strong GPA, various other factors come into play when determining academic honors. However, please note that these details are subject to change and it's always a good idea to double-check with official USNA resources or a current student or staff member for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
