What Is the AIM Program at the Naval Academy?

I've heard about the AIM program at the Naval Academy and wonder what it involves. How can high school students participate, and what benefits does it offer for someone considering a naval career?

The AIM (Academy Introduction Mission) program at the U.S. Naval Academy is aimed at high school students entering their senior year who are interested in exploring a naval career and experiencing the Academy lifestyle. It is a one-week summer program that places participants in a simulated Midshipman environment.

Such sessions are designed to give students a broad sense of the academic, physical, and moral challenges they would face at the Academy. Students will experience a blend of intellectual and physical tasks along with exposure to the rigorous training and lifestyle at the Naval Academy. Participants live in Bancroft Hall, eat in King Hall, and participate in academic and leadership workshops. They also partake in seamanship and navigation classes and a variety of sports and physical training, including swimming, martial arts, and basic fitness.

Each one-week session is led by Midshipman Program Leaders who guide participants throughout the week. These program leaders are a key part of making sure that AIM students get an authentic and useful experience, as they themselves have gone through the same process.

To participate in the AIM Program, interested students must complete an online application which includes short essays. Admission to the program is competitive, as it is free to attend and room and board for the week are included. The program is typically offered during July.

The benefits of participating in this program are extensive. High school seniors who are considering a naval career will gain a clear understanding of what life at a military academy looks like. It allows them to consider whether this path fits their goals while experiencing first-hand the camaraderie, discipline, and leadership opportunities the Naval Academy has to offer. This program also provides a taste of the academic challenges they will face, and emphasizes the importance of physical fitness in daily life at the academy.

It's a great way to get a first-hand look at what the Naval Academy has to offer and to determine if the challenges, opportunities, and rewards of the Midshipman lifestyle are a good fit for you as an individual.
