What are the requirements for military counselor jobs?

I'm considering a career as a military counselor and I'd like to know what the general job requirements are. Do I need a specific degree or certification, and how much experience is typically expected for these roles?

To pursue a career as a military counselor, the path often starts with completing a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as psychology, social work, counseling, or human services. However, to provide professional counseling services in the military setting, a master's degree from a relevant, accredited program is generally required. Common master's degree pathways include mental health counseling, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, or social work.

Remember that licensure is a crucial step to becoming a practicing military counselor. This usually involves passing a state or national exam after graduation, such as the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) or the National Counselor Examination (NCE).

Regarding experience, each branch of the military has its own standards, but generally, some level of supervised clinical experience is necessary. This is often fulfilled by internships or practicums during your degree programs.
