What is the role of a military electronics technician?

Thinking about becoming a military electronics technician but not exactly sure what they do. What are the typical responsibilities, and is this role more hands-on or focused on theoretical work? I'd love to hear about some experiences!

As an electronics technician in the military, you would be primarily responsible for the maintenance and repair of various electronic systems and technology that the military utilizes. This could include radar systems, communication equipment, navigation systems, and even weapon systems. Essentially, any technology in the military that has an electronic component might fall under your purview.

This role is fundamentally hands-on, involving the direct interaction with and repair of physical equipment. An individual in this role needs to have a practical and applied understanding of electronic systems, circuits, and components. You should feel comfortable with troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair work.

While theoretical knowledge, such as understanding electronic principles and circuit theory, is necessary for this role, much of the work is practical application. You would use your theoretical background to guide the hands-on aspect of your job, namely maintaining and troubleshooting hardware.

Working in this role also cultivates a host of practical and transferrable skills. These can include organizational skills due to managing parts and tools, critical thinking and problem-solving for diagnosing issues, and even teamwork since many projects could be group efforts.

Experiences can vary greatly depending on your specific assignment, the branch of the military you're serving in, and the types of technology you're tasked with handling. Squadron deployments might have you repairing flight navigation systems on aircraft carriers, while other assignments might have you maintaining radar systems on remote bases.
