How do you secure a job before leaving the military?

For those who are in or have been in the military, I'm wondering about the process of getting a job lined up before transitioning back to civilian life. What resources or programs are available to help with this?

There are quite a few resources and programs available to aid military individuals in their transition to civilian employment. One notable program is the Department of Defense's SkillBridge Program, which equips service members with job skills and employment opportunities during their last 180 days of service. As a part of this program, you have the chance to work in internships or apprenticeships giving you beneficial real-world experience.

Another resource is the Veterans Employment Center (VEC) run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VEC offers online tools that help veterans build resumes, translate military skills to civilian occupations, and connect with employers who are extremely keen on hiring veterans.

You can also seek assistance from career service organizations like Hiring Our Heroes, and resources like the American Job Center Network, both of which provide customized job search assistance and have a focus on helping veterans.

In terms of personal pointers:

1. Start your job search early, well before your transition. Networking is essential, reach out to fellow veterans who have successfully transitioned or use platforms like LinkedIn.

2. Take the time to translate your military acronyms and jargon into civilian language. This makes it easier for potential employers who are not familiar with military terms to understand your achievements and skills.

3. Take advantage of any opportunity to develop civilian qualifications while in service. This could include any applicable certifications, technical training courses or advanced degrees.

4. Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job application. Show how your military skills and experiences directly relate to the job requirements.

Remember that the process may take time and might seem daunting but there are numerous resources, programs, and networks out there to guide and assist you through your transition. Best of luck!
