Any advice on becoming a military freefall instructor?

The idea of becoming a military freefall instructor sounds thrilling! Could someone explain what the requirements and steps are to pursue this job within the military? Is it possible to start on this path soon after high school?

Becoming a Military Freefall Instructor (MFFI) is quite a specialized and advanced role within the military. It’s certainly thrilling and adventurous, but it also requires rigorous training and notable physical and mental resilience.

First, you must be a part of the U.S. military. The military serves as the initial pathway towards this role, so enlisting in one of the branches of the military (like the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or the Coast Guard) after high school could set you on the right path forward.

After enlisting, your path to becoming a MFFI typically starts with Basic Combat Training or Boot Camp, depending on the branch of service you join. This is where you'll learn the basics of being a soldier, including physical training, military customs and courtesies, and weapons training.

Next, you need to complete the Basic Airborne Course (BAC), a three-week training course that teaches military personnel the techniques involved in parachute jumping and landing, and the procedures for airborne operations.

The Military Freefall School (MFFS) is another major stepping stone. Here, you will learn freefall parachuting procedures. The course includes two parts: the MFF parachutist course and the MFF Jumpmaster course.

Once you have a certain amount of military freefall jumps under your belt (typically around 50 jumps), only then can you attend the Jumpmaster course. This course further validates your skills, preparing you to inspect parachutists and lead military freefall operations.

Now, to become a MFFI, or a trainer, you need to complete the rigorous MFFI Course. This course includes training in teaching techniques, the principles of learning, writing lesson plans, delivering practical exercises, and more.

In order to maintain your instructor certification, you'll be required to perform a minimum number of jumps each year.

Bear in mind the process may vary slightly depending on the specific branch of the military, but this gives you an overall idea. Always consult with a military recruitment officer or counselor who can provide the most current and detailed path based on your unique circumstances.
