Considering military instructor jobs?

Does anyone know what it takes to become a military instructor? I'm really interested in possibly working in this field, either in the U.S. or internationally. Would love some advice on the education and experience needed.

To become a military instructor, certain prerequisites are typically required. These can vary depending on the branch of military service such as Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard, as well as the types of training programs you're interested in teaching.

First, you need to be a member of the military. Whether you join through enlistment or are commissioned as an officer, the military will provide extensive training in its own right. You'll go through basic training, and then more specialized training depending on your role.

Education plays a significant role as well. While the military will provide job-specific training, having a bachelor's degree related to the field you wish to instruct can strengthen your candidacy. Subjects such as military science, physical education, or engineering might be useful depending on the type of instruction you'll provide. If you're seeking higher-ranking positions, consider advanced degrees in fields like strategic studies or military history.

But perhaps the most important prerequisite for a military instructor is experience. Usually, you must have several years of active military service. Demonstrated expertise in a specific area — such as weapons, tactics, leadership, fitness, technical practice, or languages — is also often required. The military values real-world experience, so having served in relevant roles or having been deployed can make you more eligible to become an instructor.

Leadership abilities are also crucial as this job requires the mentorship of new recruits or soldiers undergoing advanced training. Good interpersonal and public speaking skills can also be beneficial.

As for working internationally, language skills and knowledge of other cultures can be a considerable advantage. Also, each country has its own specific requirements to become a military instructor, so make sure to research those as well.

Lastly, keep in mind that these are general guidelines and can vary significantly depending on many factors. You may want to speak with a recruiter or mentor to gain more insight into this particular career path within the military.
