What are the options for biochemists in the military?

I'm interested in biochemistry and thinking about joining the military after college. What kind of roles are available for someone with a biochemistry background? Is there a particular branch that's better suited for this field?

Several roles within the military can leverage a background in biochemistry. These generally fall within the branches of medical, research, or environmental health.

1. Medical Services: Biochemists can work in roles related to medical technology or laboratory science. The Navy, for example, has a Medical Services Corps with a Healthcare Science division that includes Clinical Laboratory Scientists. Their roles involve conducting medical laboratory tests for diagnosing diseases and in managing blood banks.

2. Research: Roles are also available in military research institutions. Biochemists could contribute to biomedical research or the development of chemical defenses. An example would be a position at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), where they conduct research in areas such as bio-defense.

3. Environmental Health: The usage and storage of chemicals in the military requires biochemists for ensuring safety and compliance with regulations. In the Air Force, Bioenvironmental Engineers, who might have a background that includes biochemistry, would be experts in mitigating environmental hazards.

As for the branch, each has positions suited for biochemists. The Air Force and Navy, for example, have significant healthcare and research roles. The Army also offers research opportunities. The choice ultimately depends on the exact role you're interested in and your career goals.

Remember to discuss your interests with a recruiter from each branch. They can provide more specific information about the opportunities available to you as a biochemist.
