What military jobs involve working with computers?

I'm a high school junior interested in technology, and I'm considering a career in the military. Are there roles within the military that focus on computer skills or cybersecurity? I'd love to know more about the options in this field.

Numerous roles within the military are focused on information technology, computer science, and cybersecurity. These roles exist across all four branches - Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines - as well as the newer branch, the Space Force.

Starting with the U.S. Army, they have roles like Information Technology Specialists, Cyber Operations Specialists, and Cryptologic Cyberspace Intelligence Collectors/Analysts. The U.S. Navy offers positions such as Information System Technicians and Cryptologic Technicians.

The U.S. Air Force offers positions in Cyber Systems Operations and Cyber Transport Systems. Similarly, the Marine Corps has roles as Cyber Network Operators. Lastly, the relatively new branch, the U.S. Space Force, has opportunities in digital and cybersecurity as they monitor and maintain satellites and digital communication systems.

For cybersecurity specifically, each branch has its specialized unit. For example, there's the Army's Cyber Command and the Navy's Fleet Cyber Command, focused on cybersecurity and national defense-related to cyber operations. These units offer roles like Cyber Operations Officer, Cyber Network Defender, and Cyber Operations Specialist.

Keep in mind that eligibility for these roles often includes passing the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), and for cyber-related roles, obtaining a top-secret security clearance. Prior experience and certifications may also help, such as a CompTIA A+ certification for IT Specialists.

Of course, this is just a snapshot of the opportunities available. There are numerous roles and specializations within the field of military information technology and cybersecurity. Be sure to thoroughly research and consider your interests as you explore potential career paths.

Lastly, remember that military roles can potentially provide great training and experience for a future career in the civilian sector. For example, after serving, many military personnel transition into roles in corporate security or IT departments, or they offer their expertise to businesses as consultants. In this way, serving in a computer-based role in the military can potentially provide a strong foundation for long-term career growth in the field of technology.
