What are the typical score requirements for military jobs?

I've heard that different military jobs have score requirements. Can someone explain how these scores work and what’s usually needed to qualify for various positions? Are there ways to improve your score if necessary?

The scores you're referring to are probably the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) scores, which are used by the U.S. military to evaluate your abilities and decide where you're most likely to excel. Each branch has minimum score requirements for enlistment. For example, the Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve require a minimum AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score of 30; the Air Force, Coast Guard, and Navy demand higher scores (31, 36, and 35 respectively).

However, the ASVAB isn't just a pass/fail test. It's divided into several subtests, and the scores from these are used to compute line scores for various military occupations. Each military job (MOS for Army and Marines, AFSC for Air Force, or rating for Navy and Coast Guard) has certain line score requirements, and higher scores can give you more options.

For example, to become an Aviation Support Equipment Technician in the Navy, you might need a total of 210 in the Verbal (VE), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), and Auto and Shop Information (AS) sections.

Although it's hard to give a general "typical" score for military jobs because they're so diverse, aiming for a high ASVAB composite score should typically qualify you for a broad range of opportunities.

As for improving your score, test prep is key. The ASVAB is a multiple-choice test covering various areas such as English, mathematics, science, and technical knowledge. It's a good idea to spend some time reviewing these areas and doing some practice tests to familiarize yourself with the format. You can find ASVAB study guides and practice exams online to help with this. Studying regularly and focusing on areas where you're weaker can help you improve your scores significantly.
