Which military jobs prepare you for civilian careers?

I'm considering the military after high school but ultimately want a civilian career. Which military jobs are best for gaining skills that transition well to civilian roles?

Any role in the military can give you transferable skills like leadership, teamwork, discipline, and a strong work ethic, which are valuable in civilian jobs. However, some military jobs do align specifically with civilian professions, and will provide you with real world experience in those fields.

For instance, if you're interested in healthcare or medicine, there are positions in every branch of the military that will give you hands-on experience, such as Combat Medic Specialist in the Army or Hospital Corpsman in the Navy.

If technology is your forte, consider an Information Technology Specialist or Cyber Operations Specialist role. They will develop your technical skills and could lead to a career in IT or cybersecurity in the civilian world.

Other positions, like the Army's Public Affairs Specialist or the Navy's Mass Communication Specialist, could be the springboard into a career in communications, journalism, PR, or digital media.

If you have an interest in law enforcement or security, consider a role as a military police officer or in the Army's Criminal Investigation Command (CID). These positions might make a smooth transition into a civilian law enforcement agency.

Before making a choice, consider your interests, aptitudes, and long-term career goals. Additionally, discuss your options with military recruiters to understand better the roles that best fit your objectives. Remember, it's not just about the skills you can transfer, but also the passion and interest you have in the field!
