Are there military jobs that accept beards?

I'm interested in joining the military, but I prefer to keep my beard. Are there any military jobs or branches that allow beards, or would I have to shave it off completely?

The regulations regarding facial hair in the United States military are generally strict and most service men and women are required to be clean-shaven. The primary reason for this rule is that beards can interfere with the proper fit of gas masks and other protective gear, potentially putting soldiers at risk in hazardous environments.

That being said, there are a few exceptions. For instance, Navy SEALs and other special operations forces are sometimes permitted to grow beards when assigned to non-combat roles or when deployed in countries where beards are culturally accepted, as blending in can be a key aspect of their mission. However, this is often on a case-by-case basis and dependent on the needs of the mission.

Another notable exception is for religious accommodations. In recent years, the military has granted waivers allowing Sikh men, who traditionally do not cut their hair or beards as a part of their religious practice, to maintain their beards while serving. Each branch has its own policies and procedures for these kinds of religious waivers.

It's important to note that rules and regulations can vary between branches and even between units in the same branch, and are subject to change. Therefore, you should reach out directly to individual branches or recruiters for the most accurate and updated information. Keep in mind that while it might be possible to get a waiver or exception, it's by no means guaranteed. The military places a high value on uniformity and discipline, and these standards contribute to the effectiveness and camaraderie of the unit.

So, if keeping your beard is an absolute must, you might find it challenging in most military jobs. A conversation with a recruiter might provide some pathways or alternatives you haven't considered yet.
