Military Jobs Involving Animals - What's Available?

I've always had a passion for working with animals and I'm curious about what military jobs involve animal care or training. Are there specific roles, and what qualifications would be beneficial?

Indeed, there are several roles within the military that involve working with animals.

One of the most common roles is as a Military Working Dog Handler. In this position, you would train and work with dogs that perform various roles, such as search and rescue, drug and bomb detection, and patrolling. This job requires a love for dogs, good physical conditioning, and patience.

The Army's Veterinary Corps is another interesting path. As a Veterinary Corps Officer, you would provide care to government-owned animals, such as military working and ceremonial horses. Tasks may include general healthcare, surgery, or preventative care. This position requires a degree in veterinary medicine.

There's also a role of Animal Care Specialist, tasked with prevention and control of diseases transmitted from animals to humans. They're responsible for animal care duties in clinics, mobile surgical hospitals, and even on the battlefield.

In terms of qualifications, for veterinary roles, you would typically need to have a degree in the field and possibly pass certain certification exams. As a Dog Handler, the military generally provides the necessary training, but experience with dogs could be beneficial. For all these roles, physical fitness, a love of animals, and a commitment to their well-being, along with a strong ethic of service, are important factors.

Maintenance of high academic standing in science-related subjects would also be advantageous for roles requiring further studies. Moreover, having leadership roles in animal-related extracurriculars (such as volunteering in animal shelters or clubs associated with wildlife) can be beneficial showcasing your interest and commitment.
