Exploring military roles involving dogs

I've always had a passion for working with dogs and am curious about military jobs that involve them. What kinds of roles are there, and what qualifications or experience do I need to work in that field?

Working with military dogs, also known as Military Working Dogs (MWDs), provides an opportunity to harness your passion for dogs while serving your country. These dogs have a variety of roles from search and rescue, to explosive detection, to patrol and security. Handlers of these dogs act as trainers and caretakers, building a strong bond while keeping each other safe.

One role is a MWD Handler. Handlers work closely with dogs, training them to perform specialized tasks such as detecting explosives or narcotics. Handlers must assess the dog's health and behavior, and they're also responsible for the dog's care and well-being.

Another role is a Veterinary Corps Officer. These are the veterinarians who care for the dogs, maintaining their health and ensuring they're fit for duty.

As for getting into these roles, a strong interest in working with dogs is obviously essential, along with a love for animals in general. Physical fitness is also crucial, as is the ability to remain calm and think clearly under stressful conditions.

For the MWD Handler role, while no specific experience is required, a background in working with dogs, such as in a rescue shelter or as a dog trainer, could be beneficial. Military training will cover what you need to know regarding specific tasks and duties.

To become a Veterinary Corps Officer, you would need to earn a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) and a state license, along with meeting the additional application requirements for military service.

Regardless of the role, there will be a demanding training process to serve in these roles in the military. You might find it helpful to reach out to a military recruiter who can guide you through the application process and requirements.
