What kinds of military postal jobs are available?

I'm interested in postal work within the military. What kinds of jobs are there, and do they differ significantly from civilian postal jobs? What are the employment benefits or challenges in these military-related postal positions?

There are several mail-related positions within the United States Military, across all branches. When you think of a "postal" job, you probably envision someone sorting or delivering mail, and these opportunities do exist in the form of Postal Service Clerks, Mail Delivery Clerks, and Postal Operations Officers. However, the military also offers related positions such as Mail Equipment Operator, Mail Handlers, and Automated Postal Operations Specialist.

What distinguishes these military positions from similar civilian postal jobs is the context in which they operate. For example, in the military, you might manage mail operations and deliveries in locations around the world, including areas of conflict. This could require deployment to different locations on short notice.

As a Postal Service Clerk, you would be responsible for running postal retail windows, performing financial transactions, delivering mail, and assisting customers with their postal needs. As a Mail Delivery Clerk, your duties would mainly revolve around sorting and delivering mail to various units within your post or base. On the other hand, a Postal Operations Officer oversees and manages all postal unit activities and personnel.

The benefits of these jobs can be significant. You're going to receive the standard military benefits, which includes decent pay, healthcare, housing allowance, 30 days of paid vacation per year, among others. Additionally, these positions can be less physically demanding and risky compared to certain combat-related military roles. On the downside, some people find the potential for rapid, dramatic changes in work environment and living conditions to be a bit unsettling. Also, as with all military jobs, you might face longer working hours and you wouldn't have the same level of job security as civilians in the postal service.

Ultimately, whether you’ll enjoy a military postal job depends on your specific needs and preferences. It's an interesting way to serve your country while simultaneously building valuable skills that can translate to civilian jobs later.
