Understanding the Difficulty of Landing a Job with Military Sealift Command

I've heard that getting a job with the Military Sealift Command can be tough. Can anyone share their experiences or tips on improving my chances? Any specific qualifications they look for?

Based on what I've gathered, getting a job with the Military Sealift Command (MSC) can indeed be competitive, since MSC is a coveted place to work in the maritime industry due its comprehensive benefits and job stability.

One thing to bear in mind is that MSC requires all mariners to have the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) and endorsements for the positions they are applying for. So, to enhance your chances, it's beneficial to have all necessary endorsements for the position you want. Additionally, possessing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which is issued by the Transportation Security Administration, will be necessary.

Work experience and qualifications always matter. If you have prior military experience, or have worked in commercial or private sea service, these experiences can make a significant difference. However, MSC places a high value on work experience in civilian mariner roles, so having experience in similar roles can be hugely beneficial.

Lastly, like any job application, it’s important to tailor your resume and application to highlight any relevant experiences, certifications, and skills that fit the job description. Emphasize your ability to work as part of a team, your adaptability to the unique lifestyle onboard a ship, and any technical skills relevant to the position.

Remember to be patient. The hiring process might take a while because of the in-depth background checks and medical examinations required. Persistence and patience are key in pursuing a career with MSC. Good luck!
