A Third Officer in the Military Sealift Command (MSC) is primarily a navigation safety officer. They work as part of the deck department on US navy vessels, including combat logistics, special mission, and pre-positioning ships. Their main duties revolve around safe operation and navigation of the ship, management of safety equipment, and help in coordination of lifeboat and firefighting teams.

Third Officers are expected to have a strong knowledge of maritime navigation, ship handling, emergency procedures, and employing safety measures on board. As an MSC Third Officer, you'll be responsible for:

- Navigating the ship, plotting and checking the ship's route, and updating charts and publications.

- Performing regular deck maintenance and inspections to ensure the safety and functionality of life-saving and firefighting equipment.

- Assisting in cargo handling, anchoring, mooring, fueling, and towing operations.

- Standing bridge watches, overseeing lookouts, and directing helmsmen.

- Meeting necessary ship protection levels for security.

In terms of qualifications, at a minimum, you'll need a Bachelor's Degree from a maritime academy and a US Coast Guard license as Third Mate, Any Gross Tons, Oceans. You will also need a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), and STCW certification. The U.S. Department of Defense will require you to pass a security check, as well. You also must be in good physical health and capable of meeting the physical demands of the role, which may include long periods at sea.
