How do military seniority rights affect transitioning to government jobs?

I'm trying to understand how seniority from military service is considered when applying to government jobs. Does veteran status give a significant advantage, and are there any specific government sectors that value this experience more than others?

Veteran status can indeed play an appreciative role while transition from a military career to a civil federal job. By federal law, veterans who are disabled or who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during certain specified time periods or in military campaigns are entitled to preference over non-veterans both in Federal hiring practices and in retention during reductions in force.

When it comes to specific sectors, all federal jobs follow the guidelines mandated by the federal government when it comes to veteran hiring preferences. However, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, or Department of Homeland Security positions may have more of a likelihood to directly relate to a veteran's prior military role, potentially making transitioning into these sectors more seamless.

The Veterans' Preference Act also assists veterans to obtain preference in Federal civil service employment and retention during reductions in force or layoffs. This preference is usually implemented through a point system. For instance, a five-point preference is given to veterans who served during a war, or during specific campaigns or expeditions, and who were discharged or released under honorable conditions. A ten-point preference is given to disabled veterans and certain others with derived preference (e.g., spouses, widows, or mothers of veterans).

Keep in mind that while veterans' preference does not guarantee jobs to military veterans, it does show the government's commitment to helping veterans transition into civilian life. It's also important to note that while these advantages exist at the federal level, they may not always translate to the same advantages within state, county, or city government jobs, which have different hiring practices and regulations.
