How can military singing jobs align with a passion for music?

I'm really passionate about singing and I'm thinking about joining the military. I've heard there are singing jobs in the military, like in bands or choirs. Could someone explain what these roles are like and how to pursue them?

Absolutely, each branch of the military—Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, and Coast Guard—has its own band and choir that perform at various ceremonies, parades, and other functions. These are full-time military roles, so in addition to your musical responsibilities, you would also be subject to military training and command.

Military musicians have the opportunity to perform all kinds of styles, from classical to jazz to pop. Depending on the specific role and band, you might sing in a choir, as part of a band, or even as a soloist. Singers often have the opportunity to travel for performances, too.

As for how to get into such roles, it is a competitive process. First, you'll need to enlist in the military for whichever branch you are interested in, this process will include meeting with a recruiter, passing medical examinations, and attending basic training. After getting into the military, you will need to audition for the band or choir. Keep in mind that different branches have different audition requirements.

For instance, if you want to join the Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” you would need to pass an Army Physical Fitness Test and meet the Army’s height and weight standards. In addition to these requirements, an audition is necessary where you have to perform a prepared solo, sight-read a piece of music, and show some proficiency in theory and ear training.

One recommendation I have is to start preparing now by honing your singing and performing skills. This could include joining local choirs or bands, taking singing lessons, or going to music school.

Remember, just like with any military role, you'll be subject to Military Enlistment Standards: you'll need to meet certain age, citizenship, and physical standards, for example. As you explore this path, be sure to take these considerations into account. It can be a unique and fulfilling way to blend your passion for singing with service to your country.
