Seeking info on military software jobs

I've been thinking about pursuing a military career with a focus on software and tech roles. Does anyone know what kind of software jobs are available in the military and what skills are necessary to land these positions?

Indeed, the U.S. military offers a variety of roles related to software engineering and technology. These roles span across different branches of the military, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, the Coast Guard, and Space Force.

You could consider roles like an IT Specialist, where you would manage military computer systems and networks, a Cyber Warfare Engineer, where you would be responsible to develop software tools and hardware assets dedicated to cybersecurity, or a Signals Intelligence Analyst, where you would analyze foreign communications/activity and relay that information by producing combat, strategic, and tactical intelligence reports. More specialized tech roles typically found in the Air Force or Space Force might involve managing satellite communication systems or development of software for spacecraft.

Honing your skills and technical knowledge is crucial. Programming competency in languages like Python, C++, and Java; understanding of database management; cybersecurity practices; network architecture knowledge are often necessary in these roles. For some positions, you might also need to understand certain hardware or system-specific software.

Also, remember that to serve in any capacity in the military, you'll often need to go through basic training and meet certain physical and personal conduct standards, amongst other requirements. You should bear in mind that military service may also involve deployment and other commitments not typically associated with civilian roles.

Researching the individual roles available and their specific requirements can help you determine what best suits your interests and skillsets. Contacting a military recruiter also can provide more tailored guidance based on your background, educational level, and career goals. If you're currently in college or planning to attend, participating in an ROTC program could provide useful exposure, training, and scholarship opportunities.
