How to transition from high school to the Naval Academy?

I'm really interested in attending the Naval Academy right after high school. What steps do I need to start taking now to make sure I'm on the right path? Any advice from those who've done it?

Transitioning from high school to the United States Naval Academy is a rigorous but rewarding journey. Here are some steps you'll need to follow:

1. Academics: Aim for high performance in your schoolwork, as the Naval Academy admissions process is competitive. Emphasize particularly on subjects such as calculus, chemistry, and physics as they form part of the Academy's core curriculum.

2. Fitness: Physical fitness is crucial for admission to the Naval Academy. Be active in sports or other physical activities, and try to meet or exceed the benchmarks in the Candidate Fitness Assessment.

3. Leadership and Character: The Naval Academy values leadership experience and character. Participate in extracurricular activities where you can take on leadership roles (such as Tier 2 and 3 activities). This could be in sports, clubs, community service, or other settings. Showcase your ethical and moral standards as well.

4. Medical Examination: You must pass a medical exam to be eligible for the Naval Academy. This will be done through the Department of Defense Medical Evaluation Review Board (DoDMERB).

5. Nomination: Attaining a nomination, typically from a US Representative or Senator, is a necessary part of the admissions process. You can apply for these nominations starting the spring of your junior year.

6. Standardized Testing: As of 2024-2025 application cycle, Naval Academy requires SAT or ACT scores. While the Academy considers all parts of your application, strong scores can certainly strengthen your application overall.

7. Apply Early: The Naval Academy has a rolling admissions process, which means applying early could benefit you.

Remember, receiving and accepting an appointment to the Naval Academy also means committing to five years of active duty service after graduation, so you'll want to ensure that this path aligns with your long-term goals.
