Is the Coast Guard Academy free to attend?

I'm curious about the cost of attending the US Coast Guard Academy. I know some military academies cover tuition, but I’m not sure if this is the same for the Coast Guard. Could someone clarify how the financial side works?

All cadets attending the United States Coast Guard Academy receive a full scholarship covering not only tuition, but also room and board, and a monthly stipend for personal expenses. This full coverage is part of the commitment you make to serve in the Coast Guard for a minimum of five years post-graduation.

However, it's also important to note that the path to admission can be highly competitive due to this financial benefit alongside the excellent education and leadership development offered there. As such, applicants are often evaluated on their academic performance, leadership skills, physical fitness, and character.

In return for this significant investment, after graduation, cadets are commissioned as Ensigns in the U.S. Coast Guard, ready to lead and perform critical missions in service of their nation. They will then serve a five-year active-duty service commitment, the longest commitment of any of the service academies. There's an additional fee-based obligation if you decide to attend flight school.

As with all substantial commitments, it's worth considering whether this path aligns with your career goals and personal values before undertaking it.
