Understanding Physical Requirements for Coast Guard Academy

Can someone help break down the physical requirements for admissions to the Coast Guard Academy? I'm curious about what their fitness expectations are and how to effectively train to meet them before applying.

Of course, happy to provide some details! The United States Coast Guard Academy does require applicants to take and pass the Physical Fitness Exam (PFE). This test is designed to assess a baseline level of physical fitness and comprises of three components:

1. Push-ups: The goal here is to perform as many proper form push-ups you can in 2 minutes. Proper form includes keeping a straight body line from your shoulders to your ankles and fully extending your arms on each repetition.

2. Sit-ups: Much like the push-ups, this is also a 2-minute timed test. The goal is to do as many sit-ups as possible in the given time. A proper sit-up should start with your back flat on the ground, knees bent at about a 90-degree angle, and someone holding your feet down. You must lift your upper body until your elbows touch your knees.

3. 1.5 Mile Run: This is a test of your cardiovascular endurance. The goal is to complete a 1.5-mile run as quickly as possible. Make sure to pace yourself appropriately to complete the run efficiently.

For your convenience, the approximate qualifying scores are as follows:

- Push-ups: Males - 29, Females - 15

- Sit-ups: Males - 38, Females - 32

- 1.5 mile run: Males - 12:51 minutes, Females - 15:26 minutes

These are minimums, and applicants are strongly encouraged to aim for the best score possible. To prepare, I recommend creating a balanced fitness program that includes both strength training (for the push-ups and sit-ups) and cardio, like running or swimming (for the 1.5-mile run). Also, it might be helpful to practice the actual events under timed conditions to get comfortable with the format. If possible, consider seeking guidance from a fitness trainer or coach who can provide person-specific advice.

Good luck with your training!
