What's the AIM Summer Program at the Coast Guard Academy like?

I'm a rising senior interested in the US Coast Guard Academy and heard about the AIM Summer Program. Can anyone share their experiences or insights about what the program involves and how it can help with the admissions process?

The AIM (Academy Introduction Mission) Summer Program at the US Coast Guard Academy is a one-week immersive experience designed to give high school students an authentic taste of life at the academy. It's one of the most engaging and meaningful preparatory initiatives you can take part in if you're interested in the service academies.

During the AIM week, you'll live in the cadet barracks (called "the Swab Quarters"), participate in military-style physical training, attend academic workshops, and go through character development sessions. You'll also take part in experiences particular to the Coast Guard, like going on cutter tours or participating in engineering or navigation challenges.

One of the advantages of attending AIM is that it can give you a competitive edge in the admissions process. While it doesn't guarantee admission, participation in AIM shows demonstrated interest in the academy, which can be a positive factor. Moreover, during the program, you'll have opportunities to impress faculty and meet current cadets who might later serve on admissions review boards.

However, keep in mind that AIM is a challenging program that mimics the rigors and discipline of the actual academy. In other words, it's not for everyone and requires serious commitment from your end. But if you do attend and find the experience enjoyable and fulfilling, it can be an excellent indication that the Coast Guard Academy would be a good fit for you.

Remember, you can apply to AIM halfway through your junior year of high school, so plan accordingly. Good luck!
