How Hard Is It to Get Into the Coast Guard Academy?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and want to know about the acceptance rate and what makes a strong applicant. If anyone has tips on making my application stand out, I'd love to hear them!

The United States Coast Guard Academy is very competitive, with an acceptance rate of around 20%. Your academic strength and leadership capacities are evaluated rigorously, including your high school grades, rigor of your classes, and standardized test scores.

Just like many of the military academies, a high SAT or ACT score is critical. Applicants typically have an SAT score between 1200 and 1370 or an ACT score between 26 and 32. While standardized test scores are a fundamental part of your application, the Coast Guard Academy also places heavy importance on the class rank and GPA—most accepted students are in the top 10% of their high school class.

In addition to academics, leadership and community service is a major part of the application. Extra-curricular activities showcasing your leadership abilities, such as serving in student government, captaining a sports team, or leading a community service initiative can go a long way. Pursuing a highly involved, leadership or achievement centered extracurricular from Tier 1 or 2 of the Extracurriculars Tiers would be impressive.

You will be asked to pass a physical examinations to ensure fitness levels required for the academy. Applicants to the Coast Guard Academy must also pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment which includes a variety of physical tests such as push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1-mile run.

Applicants have better chances if they receive a nomination, often through a U.S. senator or representative. To secure one, start the nomination application as early as possible, as it is a highly competitive and a selective process.

Making your application stand out can be achieved by highlighting experiences that demonstrate personal growth, resilience, and commitment to public service. A unique personal story or powerful narrative about why you're pursuing this path can be very effective in your essays.
