What's included in the Coast Guard Academy's packing list?

I'm considering applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I've read that there's a specific packing list for new cadets. Can anyone share details about what's typically included and if there's anything specific I should keep in mind when packing?

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) does provide a packing list to each incoming cadet. This is meant to help ensure that you bring the necessary items but also avoid bringing items that are not allowed in the barracks.

The exact packing list might vary slightly each year, but in general, you can expect to bring:

1. Standard military uniform items including socks, underwear, and black oxford shoes. Once you arrive, you will be issued your uniform.

2. Civilian clothes for certain off-duty occasions, although the type and amount of civilian clothes allowed may be limited so be sure to review the guidelines carefully.

3. Personal hygiene items like toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, shampoo, etc.

4. Bed sheets, blankets, and pillowcases.

5. Study materials, which may include notebooks, pens, pencils, and a desktop or laptop computer.

6. You may also want to bring a few personal items, like family photos or other small mementos to make your space feel more like home.

Before you start packing, you should receive specific instructions from the Coast Guard Academy with a detailed list of everything you'll need to bring and further clarifications about what's not allowed.

And remember, when in doubt, it's always better to bring less rather than more. Space in the barracks is limited, and during Swab Summer, you won't have much personal time or many opportunities to use non-essential items. Plus, there will be opportunities to get any items you need but didn't bring once you arrive. So pack light and follow the packing list closely.
