Marine and Environmental Services at Coast Guard Academy

I'm really interested in marine and environmental services and I'm considering the Coast Guard Academy as an option. Can anyone share insights about how strong their program is in these areas?

The academy offers a degree in Marine and Environmental Sciences (MES) that focuses extensively on oceanography, environmental science, fisheries biology, and coastal zone management. This program would provide you with a well-rounded foundation in your desired field. The curriculum entails a combination of field, laboratory, and classroom instruction. As part of this program, there are opportunities for you to conduct cutting-edge research in these fields on the Academy’s research vessel or alongside faculty on other projects.

Additionally, the academy also offers opportunities for cadets to minor in different areas which might supplement an interest in marine and environmental services. For example, the academy offers a Sustainability Minor, aimed at equipping cadets with the knowledge to enact sustainable practices within the realm of Coast Guard Operations.

Outside of the classroom, you'll certainly get practical experience pertaining to marine and environmental services. Given the Coast Guard's commitment to environmental protection, you will likely gain practical experience during summer deployments and other training opportunities that take place throughout your four years at the academy.

Overall, the USCGA's strong academic programs, combined with its mission-focused training, uniquely position you to excel in marine and environmental services. Do keep in mind though that being a cadet at the USCGA is about fully committing to a service-oriented military lifestyle and preparing for missions that encompass a broad range of operations, beyond the marine and environmental sector. It's a rigorous program that carries a five-year service commitment upon graduation. It's also fiercely competitive, so make sure you also have backup plans as well.
